Location: The boating lake next to the pier
Southwold Model Yacht Regattas have been held every year (except war years) since its official founding in 1894. Boats of hull length 15-36 inches are eligible, of any rigs and made of all materials, provided they are purely adjusted manually when at the side of the pond – no radio controls or other steering mechanisms permitted. All regattas are held on the boating lake next to the pier.
Sailors of any age and ability are most welcome to join in – there is no membership requirement to enter a regatta. For those interested in sailing who do not own their own boat, we have a number of excellent ‘club’ boats – particularly those suitable for children – which are specially for new sailors to borrow for a regatta. All club sailors are very friendly and will happily lend a hand to newcomers! If you are just curious to find out more, do drop by to ask a few questions and see what goes on.
The season contains a wide range of events, consisting of regular races for all boats, as well as additional cups and championships for which certain criteria apply (age of sailor, type of boat, etc…) Most regattas have a printed programme, entries for which are usually taken a day or two in advance, but if you are reading this on a regatta day and have not entered, please don’t be put off – just come along and you can normally be added as a late entry without any trouble.
